African Swine Fever – A Challenge and a Solution
ASF continues to cause serious damage to both small farms and large pig complexes — regardless of their level of biosecurity. Due to reluctance to apply vaccines and the spread of misinformation, around 2 million pigs were lost in 2024, resulting in billions of hryvnias in damages and a significant blow to the export potential of the industry.
However, international experience — particularly in Vietnam, the Philippines, and Indonesia — proves that ASF vaccination programs can be effective. For Ukraine, this underscores the need for an urgent implementation of such measures, coordination between producers and processors, and the launch of the “New Pig Farming of Ukraine” initiative, aimed at producing over 3 million tons of pork and generating up to €12 billion in added value annually (meatnews.com.ua).
Global Price Trends Comparison
- Germany (VEZG Exchange, excl. VAT): top price – €1.95/kg (≈UAH 96.33), culled sows – €1.05/kg (≈UAH 51.87)
- Poland (Cennik Rolnicze): average price – PLN 6.17/kg (≈UAH 71.26); min – PLN 5.50/kg (~UAH 63.5), max – PLN 7.10/kg (~UAH 82)
- Global carcass prices:
- EU: €2.17/kg (0% change)
- Brazil: €1.66/kg (+2%)

Ukrainian Pork: Export Potential
Ukrainian pork is increasingly competitive on the global market, creating favorable conditions for industry growth and expanding export capabilities. However, regional differences in domestic purchase prices are largely due to the uneven distribution of production and processing capacities across the country.
